The Wildlife Success Story of the Summer!
Our sweet duck family!
Dennis and I visited these ducks near our home in a park, starting late June, once or twice a week. A mama and three babies. They love people and wed sit with them until the babies started getting tired, closing their eyes. Then the mother would quack and the babies would follow her, swimming to the other side of the pond, to the marsh area, to rest/sleep.
Over the July 4 stormy weekend, sadly one of the babies didnt survive. Now it was just Mama Duck and two babies. Nevertheless they were so sweet. I even have a video of them following me.
Another time we went, something was off. I noticed one of the babies had a hook in her beak. It was around 7:30 in the evening and most places were closed. We called so many places, countless times animal control, wildlife rehabs. Raptor Trust was kind enough to say that if we could capture the baby, they would take her in and get the hook out. Next step, I called the Mayor of Kenilworth. She loved animals and had some friends come out to try to capture the duck. Even a cop got in the pond with a boat! Her other friend went in with a kayak. No luck. The ducks are fast. They didnt realize it was help, and were scared.
At this point, the ducks are now stand-offish to people. I didnt want to go back anymore and see this poor thing with a hook in her beak. I told my husband, Its up to God now.
I prayed, and I got friends to pray. Even friends who dont believe in praying, prayed in their own way!
Yesterday my husband had a gut feeling to go back to the pond after about two or three weeks. We went and the hook is no longer in the ducks mouth!
Either someone helped, or the duck got the hook out herself! She kept nuzzling her beak under the wing, so maybe she worked it out I tried contacting the Mayor and didnt hear back yet. So its a mystery as of now.
The good news is, it seems back to normal and the ducks are happy as they could be. Only now, they are a little stand-offish because of all the people who tried to help, but inadvertently frightened them.
We plan to continue to go back a few times a week and check up to them. And, please, let this be a lesson if you are fishing, PLEASE clean up after yourselves! Do not leave your hooks and fishing line lying around so wildlife can get hurt!
Ducks are sweet, beautiful animals. And they will bond with you when you respect them.
I love that I have discovered this account on Facebook. Brings hope.
Three good things today:
Love from fedi and help with a problem. I'm so glad I left other platforms and set up an account here. It really feels so much more like community, and that people actually care about each other.
Rest, with cozy blankets, given I'm in a pain flare. I'm grateful I have a comfy bed to rest in.
Framed a couple of photos to put up in the house-somehting I'd been putting off due to past trauma, but today finally managed to overcome in order to complete the task.
Good things...
hot water is running now from the new flash boiler
cleaned off my desk: filing and shredding accumulated paper
tossed a couple cheap pairs of wired ear buds (why was I keeping these things)
made my bed once upon a time I did that every morning
a couple days into my new "no snacks" protocol (I'm 20 lbs overweight, according to both my bathroom scale, and my older jeans)
"Als dit niet fijn is, wat dan wel"
Hou de punten bij.
A group of butterflies is called a kaleidoscope.
Oooh, cool! Someone followed me all the way home to tell me that my rear passenger side rear brake bulb was out. (which it was -- replaced both, because when one goes out, the other one is also likely to go as well). Ran to the auto store for bulbs, and fixed! It's so awesome when people are watching out for each other.
Hmm, sure pays to be the odd person out in terms of trends, CDs falling out of the sky for free here. I guess everyone is just streaming or paying for music subscriptions (which is the wrong thing to do, IMHO... but you've got to be an independent thinker to not just be a consumer nowadays).
Someone had a pile of CDs for free here, snagged a bunch of albums I don't have (even digitally).
Elton John / Greatest Hits (I like his stuff, I'm sure there's good tracks on there)
Steve Miller Band / Greatest Hits 1974-1978 (Fly Like An Eagle is good, don't think I know anything else)
Elton John /Greatest Hits 1976-1986 (dunno if this is a overlap to the first one)
The Essence of Dave Brubeck (already have some of his CDs)
The Very Best of Cream (I don't think I can name a single piece of music by them, lol... will have to see what that's about)
Supertramp Classics Volume 9 (no idea, I'm sure I have heard something by them)
Jimmy Buffer (not a fan... but it was free. I associate this with a certain kind of drunk loafer in Florida beach towns... lol)
Jackson Brown Running on Empty (I don't know any of the songs, at least by name. Probably have heard it).
Foghat (don't know who the heck those people are, it was a free CD, lol)
Janis Joplin (Super Hits) - the only track I recognize by name is "Me and Bobby McGee"
Saw this in the local Morrisons last week and thought it was lovely
Good things...
up and moving early, after a good sleep with lots of dreaming
productivity: way up after a couple negative days
tried a new place for lunch: cheap and very tasty (tacos)
signed up for NFL Sunday Ticket (I hope this is a good thing)
reached out to my plumber, though I haven't heard back yet (I don't blame him if he's pissed)

Good things this week:
- Nice lunch with a colleague who is leaving for a new job
- Got my hair cut
- Hit my target of going to the gym three times
- My partner got tickets to see Bob Dylan in December
- Lovely butterfly count with Cathays Wild Gardeners. Saw a small copper.
Plush toys, friends
My friends are always with me. They're plush toys. A cat, an elephant, a bunny, a hippo, a dog. Here they are, resting. Relaxing. They have their own little things to do. Their own fun. I'm always happy to see them. I adore plush friends.

nice fireworks display last night *
today is my birthday (65)
hunting for antique toy trains on eBay
drinking good, hot coffee
* They shoot the fireworks from the high school, which is across the golf course, a lake, and up a hill. So I have a fine view from my front lawn/driveway. Very convenient! Lots of folks come watch them from the golf course across the street. I've got plenty of free parking.

About yesterday:
1. Saw a dolphin from my balcony.
2. Got a long way in redefining the future of my work life.
3. Didn't need to worry about basics like roof over my head, food on the table or the safety of my loved ones.
Epic Soundtracks - Good Things - 2005
Just returned from my 20 year High School (Abitur in German) reunion. Was a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Baby Did You Miss Me - Noah Peterson
This is a collab between me and Nick Pacheco. This is a sweet and tender song about being gone too long and coming home to the one you love. It's a little bittersweet, but it's got a vibe
Good ThingsFainting bc I asked my freshman in college niece what music she liked
And the first word in the text reply was
"Depeche"
Sweet story: two off-duty nurses were getting coffee when a barista unexpectedly went into labour. And they helped deliver the baby. <3

Time will tell
Timing is everything, and it can change our lives in the most unexpected ways. From meeting someone new to making a big decision, patience and awareness are key. In today's fast-paced world, it's important to be in touch with our intuition and take breaks to boost our performance.RE:
day today, for a refreshing change. I posted a post, and also made some long-overdue changes to my subscriptions, including letting go of some paid ones that I dont follow as much anymore. Also, Sarah and I worked on a long-term budget for us, and I actually fully participated and didnt have an emotional meltdown. This is actually huge. So, on balance, its been a great day.

After three years, our clematis finally flowers. Worth the wait
First undergrad honors thesis for my current lab was successfully defended today. ::happy dance:: I have done many of them over the years but this is the first one for me at this school, and she did a great job!!
May I bring your attention to the fabulous marketing of the Aquarium of the Pacific and their animal pals. This song contains the BEST lyric ever written, smell an otters shrimpy pits which runs around my head forever now
And this medical exam video is delightful (and educational!)

The images of the moon from Artemis 2 were pretty amazing. The splash down today was a nice piece of non- apocalyptic news! And Wellington Zoo is 120 years old today.

Sometimes things work out well.
10:30 AM, I'm doing spreadsheet work for my taxes and realizing that with my new computer I'm missing the extra monitor space I had with a laptop + monitor setup.
An hour later I have a new monitor of exactly the size and cost I wanted. It's set up, and working with little effort.
Too easy - waiting for the pendulum to swing back the other way.
